What You'll Need

This is one of my favorite DIY projects because you literally find everything at the grocery store, and it takes maybe 10 minutes to put together. Also, sorry about my voice in this — I was getting sick when I filmed this and it came out raspy.

  • 1 cup organic coconut oil
  • ¾ cup Epsom salt
  • Peppermint essential oil (about 6 drops)
  • Sweet orange essential oil (about 8 drops)
  • Lemon essential oil (about 7 drops)
  • A clean container with a lid
  • Microwave-safe bowl

Step-by-Step

Step 1: Soften the coconut oil Step 1

Coconut oil comes solid at room temperature, so scoop out 1 cup into a microwave-safe bowl and heat it for about 20 seconds. You just want it soft enough to mix easily — not melted completely.

Step 2: Add the Epsom salt Step 2

Pour in ¾ cup of Epsom salt. I added a half cup first, then another quarter cup after. This is your exfoliant, and it does all the heavy lifting when it comes to scrubbing dead skin off.

Step 3: Mix in the essential oils Step 3

This is where it gets fun. Add:

  • 6 drops peppermint oil — this gives a cooling effect on your skin and smells incredible
  • 8 drops sweet orange oil — mostly for fragrance
  • 7 drops lemon oil — also for fragrance

All three of these work really well together, especially with the coconut. The smell is amazing.

Step 4: Mix everything together Step 4

Stir it all up until the salt is evenly distributed and the oils are blended in. It'll look like a thick paste.

Step 5: Let it set Step 5

Pour the mixture into a clean container and stick it in the fridge for about an hour. This lets the coconut oil firm back up into a solid body scrub.

How to Use It

Once it's solid, scoop some out in the shower. The warmth of your skin and the water will soften it into a creamy texture that spreads easily. It exfoliates without being too harsh, and the peppermint gives that cooling sensation that feels great.

Store it in the fridge between uses to keep it solid. If you leave it out, the coconut oil will soften again, which is fine — just scoop and use.
