What You'll Need

If you've ever wanted to crochet a doily but the thought of working with size 10 thread and a 1.5mm hook made you nope right out — I get it. Here's the secret: you don't have to start there.

Use a Category 2 yarn (like Yarn Art Bonia, which is 100% mercerized cotton) and a 3.5mm hook instead. This doily only takes a small amount of yarn — I used leftovers and it was plenty. The finished piece is about 5 inches across, or you can add one more round to get it to about 6.5 inches.

  • Yarn: Category 2 (fine) 100% mercerized cotton, like Yarn Art Bonia. A partial skein is enough.
  • Hook: 3.5mm (or whatever gives you a fabric you like)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving ends

Step-by-Step

Round 1: The Center Ring

Chain 8. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet). Work 23 more double crochet into the ring — that's 24 total. Join with a slip stitch into the top of the starting chain 3.

Round 2: Chain Spaces

Chain 4 (counts as first double crochet + chain 1). Double crochet into next double crochet, chain 1. Repeat from * around. At the end, chain 1 and join with slip stitch into the third chain of the starting chain 4.

Round 3: Bigger Loops

Chain 8 (counts as first double crochet + chain 5). Skip next double crochet, double crochet into next double crochet, chain 5. Repeat from * around. To close: chain 2, then double crochet into the third chain of the starting chain 8. This puts your hook in the right spot for the next round.

Round 4: V-Stitches and Singles

Chain 6 (counts as first double crochet + chain 3). Double crochet into the same stitch. Chain 2, single crochet into next double crochet. Chain 2. Into the middle chain of the next chain-5 loop (the third chain), work: double crochet, chain 3, double crochet. Repeat from * around. At the end: chain 2, single crochet into next double crochet, chain 2. Join with slip stitch into the third chain of the starting chain 6.

Round 5: Shells

Slip stitch into the next chain-3 space. Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet). Work 3 more double crochet into the same space (that's 4 total). Chain 3. Work 4 more double crochet into the same space. That's your first shell.

Into each chain-3 space around, work: 4 double crochet, chain 3, 4 double crochet. Join with slip stitch into the third chain of the starting chain 3.

You can stop here for a 5-inch doily. If you want it bigger:

Round 6 (Optional): Another Shell Round

Slip stitch across to the center of the next shell (the chain-3 space). Work the same shell: chain 3, 3 double crochet, chain 3, 4 double crochet. Repeat into every chain-3 space around. Join with slip stitch into the third chain.

Finishing

Chain 2, cut your yarn, and pull tight. Use a smaller hook or your tapestry needle to weave the tails into the stitches on the wrong side. Block it or press it with a cool iron to open up the lace.

Tips

  • Tension matters less than consistency. Your first round doesn't have to be perfect — blocking fixes a lot.
  • Count your stitches on round 1. Twenty-four double crochet is the foundation. If that's off, everything gets wobbly.
  • The "chain 2 + double crochet" trick at the end of round 3 is just a way to avoid an obvious seam. Trust it.
  • Mercerized cotton has a nice sheen and holds its shape after blocking. Acrylic won't block the same way.

This doily works up fast, uses almost no yarn, and teaches you the core techniques for bigger lace projects. Once you've made one in yarn, switching to thread feels a lot less scary.
