What You'll Need

These tiny doilies are about 6 inches across and perfect for gifting alongside miniature orchids or other small plants. I started making these two years ago when those tiny orchids started showing up in shops near me. The thread costs under 50 cents per doily, but you can easily sell the finished piece for much more — especially if someone's planning a rustic countryside wedding or event.

Let me show you how to make one.

  • Crochet thread (size 10 or similar)
  • 1.5mm or 1.75mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Step-by-Step Guide

Round 1

Chain 9. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Chain 1. Work 24 single crochets into the ring, crocheting over the yarn tail as you go. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. Cut the short yarn tail.

Round 2

Start with a beginning double crochet (or chain 3 if you prefer). Chain 2. Skip the next double crochet, double crochet into the next stitch. Chain 2, skip one, double crochet into the next. Repeat around.

At the end: chain 2, join to the first double crochet (or the third chain if you used chain 3).

Round 3

Slip stitch into the next chain-2 space. Chain 1, single crochet into the same space. Chain 3, single crochet into the next chain-2 space. Repeat chain 3 and single crochet around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Round 4

Slip stitch into the next chain-3 space. Work a beginning double crochet into the same space, then 4 more double crochets (5 total). Into each chain-3 space around, work 5 double crochets. Join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet.

Round 5

Chain 4. Work 4 treble crochets together over the next 4 double crochets. Finish them together — this counts as a 5-treble cluster with the chain 4.

Chain 7. Work 5 treble crochets together over the next 5 double crochets. Chain 7. Repeat around: 5-treble cluster, chain 7. Join with a slip stitch to the first cluster.

Round 6

Chain 1. Into each chain-7 loop, work 11 single crochets. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Round 7

Slip stitch into the second single crochet of the group of 11. Work a beginning double crochet. Chain 2, skip one single crochet, double crochet into the next. Chain 2, skip one, double crochet. Repeat until you have 5 double crochets and 4 chain-2 spaces across this group.

Skip the first single crochet of the next group. Double crochet into the second single crochet. Repeat the pattern: chain 2, skip one, double crochet. Continue around. Join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet.

Round 8

Slip stitch into the next chain-2 space. Chain 1, single crochet into the same space. Chain 3, single crochet into the next chain-2 space. Repeat chain 3 and single crochet across each group. At the end, instead of chain 3, chain 1 and work a double crochet into the first single crochet to bring your hook to the right position.

Rounds 9-10

Repeat Round 8 two more times. Chain 1, single crochet into the same space. Chain 3, single crochet into the next chain-3 space. At the end of each round, chain 1 and double crochet into the first single crochet.

After three total rounds of chain-3 loops, move to the final round.

Round 11 (Final Round)

Chain 1, single crochet into the same space.

Into the next chain-3 space: 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets (this is your shell).

Single crochet into the next chain-3 space. Shell into the next. Repeat around: single crochet, shell, single crochet, shell.

After the last shell, join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. Fasten off and hide your yarn tail.

Finishing

You can block the doily or press it with an iron. Honestly, even without blocking, this pattern comes out perfectly round and flat.
