What You'll Need

I stuck a fairy door on a tree in my backyard last weekend, and now my kids check on it every single morning. The whole thing cost me less than $15 and took maybe 20 minutes. Here's exactly how I did it.

  • A fairy door (I used a small wooden one with hinges — you can find them at craft stores or online)
  • Outdoor adhesive (weatherproof, strong stuff)
  • Tiny welcome mat
  • Mini LED lantern
  • Pebbles (from your yard or a bag at the dollar store)
  • Moss
  • Any other tiny accessories you want

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Pick the right tree

Walk around your yard and find a tree with character. Look for textured bark and interesting roots — those make the best backdrops. You want a flat spot about 6 to 12 inches off the ground. Skip trees with loose or peeling bark, because the adhesive won't hold.

Step 2: Clean the spot

Brush away any dirt, loose bark, or debris from the area where you'll attach the door. The adhesive needs a clean surface to stick.

Step 3: Attach the door

Squeeze a generous amount of outdoor adhesive onto the back of the door. Press it firmly against the tree and hold it there for about 30 seconds. I pulled out my phone's level app to make sure it was straight — nothing says "abandoned fairy home" like a crooked door.

Step 4: Build the scene

This is where it gets fun. Put the welcome mat at the base of the door. Place the LED lantern nearby — the warm glow looks great at dusk. Make a little walkway with pebbles leading up to the door, then sprinkle moss around to make it look established and magical.

That's it. You've got a fairy door in your garden.

The kids in my neighborhood went nuts for this. If you make one, your kids will too.
